New Black Eagle Jazz Band

This concert sponsored by Neal & Sharon Bozentka

The New Black Eagle Jazz Band really was new – just five years old – when they first played Music at Gretna in 1976. Of course, back then we were only two. So it’s no exaggeration to say we grew up together, the Eagles playing while we hummed along to their inimitable takes on old favorites like Tiger Rag and Basin Street Blues, listened with delight as they unearthed forgotten jazz age curios, and with amazement to their own original compositions. Nowadays, neither they nor we are quite as young as we used to be. But once they take the stage, we’re kids again. If you’ve been to a Black Eagles night at Gretna, you no doubt know what we mean, and probably plan on coming back for more age-defying sonic fun. If you haven’t yet caught them, here’s your chance to go one up on Ponce de Leon. Poor guy. He never figured out he should be looking for an Eagle’s concert, not a fountain.

Chris Brubeck's Triple Play

Saturday, August 27, 8:00 pm Purchase Tickets

This concert generously sponsored by Benkamin and Suzanne Shankroff.

When Chris Brubeck – son of jazz legend Dave – Pete “Madcat” Ruth, and Joel Brown take the stage together, it’s always an event to remember! It’s been a decade since these Gretna veterans last visited the Playhouse, and for artists as exciting as they are, that’s far too long. Weren’t around Gretna back then? Don’t know what to expect from Triple Play? We could brag some more about how great they are, but we’ll let Downbeat Magazine do that for us: “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” If Downbeat’s words sounds good to you, then so will every note that comes from Messrs. Brubeck, Brown and Ruth. Artist Website

Gretchen Parlato Band

Saturday, September 3, 8:00 pm Purchase Tickets

This concert generously sponsored by James and Colette Hipolit.

Gretchen Parlato has been turning heads ever since she won the 2004 Thelonious Monk Institute International Vocal Competition with her sultry, intriguing, agile voice and subtle charisma. The more intimately this chanteuse sings, the more she draws you inescapably in.

Since her initial triumph at the Monk, Ms. Parlato has had invitations to appear on over 50 recordings with the likes of Terence Blanchard, Kenny Barron, and Terri Lynn Carrington. Her breathtaking performances have even transfixed 2010’s Grammy award winning Best New Artist, Esperanza Spalding. “The first time I saw Gretchen perform live,” Esperanza says, “she was freaking me out. I was covered in goose bumps.”

This tour engagement of Gretchen Parlato is funded through the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Jazz Touring Network with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Artist WebsitePreview Gretchen's latest album on NPR
