2009 Mt. Gretna Jazz Festival
August 1 & 26-29 Mt. Gretna Playhouse
The Mt. Gretna Jazz Festival is Music at
Gretna’s festival within a festival. The 2009 edition features
bands large and small, from the splashy, brassy, 15-piece Phil Giordano
Jazz Orchestra to the intimate, hard bopping Cedar Walton Trio.
Cedar and Phil are just two of the artists set to join the list of jazz
greats who have graced the Mt. Gretna Playhouse stage through the years,
a list that includes some of the immortal legends of jazz: Dave
Brubeck, George Shearing, Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan, Tierney Sutton,
Ravi Coltrane, Butch Thompson, John Pizzarelli, Gary Burton, Regina
Carter, Nneena Freelon, and Gerald Veasley, not to mention perennial
favorite The New Black Eagle Jazz Band.

Rob Henderson, drums, & the Karendra Devroop Trio

Drummer Rob Henderson, the man behind Philly's H-Factor, teams with the Karendra Devroop Trio, the hottest mid-State combo going, in a Music at Gretna exclusive evening. Rob’s been compared to Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones and Max Roach, so if you’ve missed him on the Philly circuit, then here’s your chance. And you don’t even have to hop on the Schuylkill. Cedar Walton stepped out from the considerable shadow of Art Blakey to lead his own group in mid-60's and bop has never been the same. Cedar and his trio are sure to transform laid back Mt. Gretna too, into the hardest bopping town around. A jazz event not to be missed. Cedar Walton on MySpace Cedar at All About Jazz

Philly drummer Phil Giordano and his Jazz Orchestra keep alive the tradition of Count Basie and Woody Herman. This 16-piece band plays the standards, vintage songs, and original charts with dazzling enthusiasm and toe-tapping precision.
